Macy's To Close "Underperforming" Stores

The company's stores in Louisville, located in Oxmoor Center and Jefferson Mall, will remain open.

The closing stores are located in Washington Square, Indianapolis, Ind.; Prien Lake Mall, Lake Charles, La.; Rolling Acres Mall, Akron, Ohio; Canton Centre, Canton, Ohio; Randall Park Mall, North Randall, Ohio; Crossroads Mall, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Valley View Center, Dallas, Texas; Sharpstown Center, Houston, Texas; and Family Center at Riverdale, Riverdale, Utah.

"While the decision to close stores is difficult, it is necessary that we do so selectively in locations with declining sales and where we have been unable to identify sufficient growth opportunities," Terry J. Lundgren, chairman, president and CEO, said in a news release. "At the same time, we continue to open new Macy's store locations in communities where we believe we can operate successfully."

The closing locations employ a total of about 900 people. Macy's said the affected employees will be offered positions at nearby stores where possible.

Macy's, which has corporate offices in Cincinnati and New York City, operates more than 850 department stores in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico.
