Barneys New York, the luxury emporium that has been winning the hearts of fashionistas and celebrities since it opened in 1923, is kicking off their holiday campaign "Peace and Love: Have a Hippie Holiday," by offering ideeli members the chance at a gift that keeps on giving. Ten ideeli members will be offered tickets that automatically enter them into a promotion to win a one-of-a-kind, hand-painted Volkswagen Beetle (worth $25,000 dollars), as well as a $50 dollar gift card to the ultimate fashion mecca. Barneys invited artist John Paul Phillipe to decorate the car in a psychedelic swirl of doves, peace signs and flowers. Always ahead of the curve, the department store partnered with Volkswagen of America because the auto company shares the same environmentally conscious values. With that in mind, all the proceeds from this promotion go to VW Carbon Neutral Project, which helps to reforest and protect endangered species. Starting today, ideeli members have access to buy tickets at the Barneys website.

The Peace and Love campaign also marks the 50th anniversary of the peace sign. During the holiday season, the store will offer exclusive products like Fendi baguettes with a peace sign key chain, tie-dye Converse All Star high tops, and recycled t-shirts from the hip line Loomstate, plus many more fabulous gifts.

And never to be outdone, creative director Simon Doonan is also designing the legendary window displays using the same sixties-style counterculture theme. The customized Beetle will be on display in the windows of the Madison Avenue store along with giant size peace signs, vintage album covers from musicians like Jimi Hendrix and the Doors, as well as a homage to the era's female icons including Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell. There are certainly enough stylish reasons to give peace a chance this holiday.

Adidas To Lauch New Line

Adidas is rolling out a new line and retail concept for the Spring 2009 Season.

The Adidas SLVR Label will include sportswear (not performance activewear), accessories and footwear for women and men. The line will be introduced in February during New York Fashion Week with its first stand-alone store in SoHo, and a second store will open in Paris during fashion week there. Two more stand-alone stores in Los Angeles and Miami will bow during the first quarter of 2009. Each store will be between 1,000 and 1,500 square feet, and fashion week events to fete the New York and Paris shows are expected.

Additionally, in Paris and Beijing, SLVR will be sold at the new Adidas Brand Centres.

Firth on Ford

COLIN FIRTH has revealed exclusively to VOGUE.COM that he has supreme confidence in Tom Ford's move from the design studio to the director's chair.

Firth will take the lead role in A Single Man, an adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's novel of the same name, which will mark Ford's first foray into film direction.

"If he turns his hand to this with the brilliance that he's turned his hand to everything else that he's ever done in his life, it'll be a masterpiece," Firth tells us.

Following on from his latest box office hit, feel-good musical Mamma Mia, Firth is certainly ready to get his teeth into the complexities of his character, a bereaved gay professor.

"It's the world seen though the eyes of a man who is seeing things for the last time and it has a particular resonance for that reason," he explains.

Filming starts this week in LA, with stars Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, Nicholas Hoult and Ginnifer Goodwin also on board.

Former Gucci CEO Near Deal With Barney's

When Gucci CEO Mark Lee announced he would not be renewing his contract when it expires on December 31, industry insiders suspected the formidable exec might be headed to a luxury brand. Making good on his desire to "pursue other interests and spend more time in New York City," it appears Lee is headed for the top slot at Barneys New York.

Following an October 15, 2008 report in the New York Post naming Lee as a contender for the CEO slot vacated by Howard Socol last May, The Daily has confirmed that Lee is deep in negotiations with Istithmar, the Dubai-based investment firm that purchased Barneys nearly a year ago for around $950 million. Socol reportedly left Barneys after a dispute over Istithmar's expansion strategy. According to sources, finding a suitable replacement has proven especially difficult due to the non-compete clauses found in most retail executives' contracts.

On Monday, Moody's Investors Services downgraded Barneys New York Inc.'s rating, due to its weaker-than-expected operating performance and debt protection measures, as well as consumer-confidence and retail-spending slowdowns. Considering the steep price Istitmar paid for the retailer, and the gloomy economic outlook, sources say the company needs to name someone fast--and Mark Lee is its safest bet.

Lee is credited with growing Gucci's revenues by 46 percent over the past four years. He hired Frida Giannini, largely seen as a respected designer, skilled merchandiser, and uncanny trend forecaster, in the wakes of Alessandra Facchinetti and Tom Ford. This season, Giannini bowed to Lee on the runway--just days after announcing he was stepping down.

Barneys currently operates nine Barneys New York stores and 19 Barneys Co-ops, along with several outlet stores. The retailer's next location will be in the Meatpacking District.

An announcement confirming Lee's appointment is said to be imminent.
